The cut list: 10 features to leave out of your v1

Dark mode, teams, a mobile app… the features that feel essential but quietly add weeks to your launch.

Every one of these is a good feature. None of them belongs in most first versions. Each adds design, edge cases and testing time before a single user has told you the core idea is worth it.

The usual suspects

  • Dark mode — nobody chooses a product for it in week one.
  • Team accounts and roles — sell to one person first.
  • Native mobile apps — a responsive web app or PWA is enough to learn.
  • Social features (feeds, likes, follows) — they need many users to feel alive.
  • Integrations — do it manually until people ask twice.
  • Advanced analytics dashboards — a spreadsheet will do.
  • Gamification (points, badges, streaks) — fix retention after you have users.
  • Multiple languages — launch in the one your first users speak.
  • Custom onboarding tours — talk to your first users instead.
  • An AI assistant bolted on — unless AI is the product, it's a distraction.

How to keep them without building them

Write every cut feature down with a reason. Share the list with early users and let them vote. When three people independently ask for the same thing, it earns its way back in.
